Prior to being repainted by CSX the 8973 was regularly rotated in and out of Browns yard in Conrail blue. This unit was assigned to Conrail Shared Assets Operations in New Jersey.

The ML (Missoula to Laurel) pulls hard up the west side of Mullan Pass at Blossburg. They tacked on 3 extra units in a power move. Normally the train was powered with the two SD-70ACe
