Captured minutes before sunrise, BNSF Railway's Provo-Denver Q-train is poised for departure from Provo yard for a 530 mile journey east to Colorado's Mile High City.

A westbound freight emerges from the then reasonably new Thistle tunnels behind 5401 and 5355 in August 1985. Another pair of tunnel motors bring up the rear.

Just like switchers, low power SDs were not big on the Rio Grande but these were beautiful hauling a train in flat country.

I was on my way to live in California, just out of college, with a secure job, a new car and seeing the Rio Grande "in the flesh" for the first time. Great start to a career.
