During the early 90's the SP was quite colorful with begged and borrowed power. Witness this scene at Joliet with a set of rare C39-8's on CHPBM (Chicago-Pine Bluff Manifest).
A couple of Conrail C39-8's along with a SD40-2 lead a CSX southbound by the Kentucky Railway Museum. Conrail C39-8 6008 would eventually be owned by CSX as their 7483 before being retired.
NS 8617 long-hood forward southbound through Charlottesville, VA, crosses the CSX at grade.
Looking at the column of smoke makes you wonder if steam is still present...

NS 185 heads west between Shawsville and Montgomery Tunnel. Second unit is NS 8489, an ex-Conrail C36-7. These units didn't last long on NS.
