West Coast Comets. Amtrak California acquired 14 Comet 1Bs from NJ TRANSIT in 2008 to accommodate its increased ridership. These cars had already been de-motorized from their original Arrow I Electric MU configuration to de-motorized coaches, and were further rebuilt in Amtrak’s Beech Grove shops to business class standards. The third car is former Amtrak Horizon dinette, which is adorned with the same “disco” stripes as the former NJT equipment, distinguishable from other similar cars by its dutch doors. These cars are currently only used for axle count purposes and are otherwise in storage, as seen here at the Amtrak Yard in Oakland, California on Sunday, July 26, 2020.
