In Amtrak's early days, Northeast Corridor trains out of Boston could be fairly modest things. A Penn Central E8, a parlor car, and two coaches made up this New York-bound train rolling through the Readville section of Boston in Amtrak's second year.
Once treated like a backwater with decrepit locomotives, cars and track, Massachusetts has become a star in the Amtrak constellation with electrification to Boston, service to Maine and an upgraded Connecticut Valley line.
