Amtrak's Denver Zephyr leaving for its overnight run with an early Amtrak rainbow of cars and locos. The lead E8A was built as CB&Q 9941B and became AMTK 333. Note the strange spark arrestors.
These are 500 hp Whitcomb/Canadian Locomotive Co. Model Number 75DE12C. Note lack of symmetry at top of hood. Was this pair coupled this way on a long-term basis?
Of all the train pictures I've taken, this has to show the most trash.
When this picture was taken, Amtrak was six-years old and still relying on some very tired second-hand E-units. And I didn't think much of these old girls then, having known them in their glory.... (more)
