The train has just departed Solana Beach and is about to run past the Del Mar Fairgrounds.
One of the people in the foreground is the engineer on the run from Maricopa to El Paso - he will see a lot of night running and the final miles into El Paso with the sun in his eyes.

The Coast Starlight had a full, summertime consist today. It was running about 40 minutes late.

If I was thinking, I would've taken the picture further back so you could see the SP Moorpark depot. This train was running almost 2 hours late.
The ice cream truck was canvassing the neighborhood at this time.
