Final Pass. Nearly 40 years after its first run over these rails, Caltrain F40PH-2 #915 is making its final run. September 20, 2024 marked the last day of diesel service on the primary Caltrain corridor between San Jose/Tamien and San Francisco. Though diesels will still be used on the southern route to Gilroy, that will consist solely of MP36 locomotives, as well as the three newer F40PH-2C units. For 915, however, this is the end. After it completes its trip to Gilroy as train 308, it will likely be deadheaded back the Caltrain's CEMOF yard and decommissioned. It's an unceremonious end for a locomotive that has been the backbone of moving commuters throughout the San Francisco Peninsula for decades. But as this era in Caltrain history comes to a close, the F40s will certainly not be forgotten.
