The tenth day of Conrail’s existence finds a meet near JU tower in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. A 30-car local train in the charge of two Lehigh Valley RS11’s waits to proceed east, while a 58-car westbound comes off of the bridge spanning the Lehigh River. This image illustrated the rapid change that has occurred since the consolidation. Some things have remained the same, including the assignment of the LV RS11’s and a large fleet of EMD switchers to Allentown. LV’s road power, however, has been either spun off to the D&H or scattered across Conrail’s vast system. Two weeks prior to this photo, the train with a Penn Central SD40 and an Erie-Lackawanna SD45-2 would have been powered with a combination of LV power, but those days are over.
