Remarks & Notes
Amtrak's Southwest Chief crosses the former Rock Island mainline as it slows to a stop at Joliet, IL on its last lap into Chicago. At this time, the lead unit no. 508 was fairly new, and forecast the future of fewer EMDs in Amtrak service. Trailing was an F40PH and a GP40. Also at this time, Amtrak was interested in express freight business, thus the three head end express box cars ahead of the standard baggage car.
