In the days when a casual stroll through an engine terminal was still possible – and interesting -- the line-up at Southern Pacific’s Bayshore near San Francisco on a September afternoon in 1958 includes Fairbanks Morse H-24-66 Train Master 4809, Texas & New Orleans PA1 211, and SP GP9 5625. Bayshore is the home terminal for Peninsula commuter engines, which explains the presence of the Train Master, reassigned two years ago from freight service on the Golden State route, and 5625, one of 22 steam-boiler equipped GP9’s purchased by SP for commuter trains and short passenger runs. The 211 is one of a dozen Texas & New Orleans PA1’s that have recently found their way westward and will eventually be renumbered in sequence with SP’ own PA’s.
