On an afternoon in late March, 1967, it was still possible to catch a set of Santa Fe PA1s hustling along High Line into Kansas City with mail and express train 4 from Albuquerque, Winslow and points west. Due into Kansas City Union Station at 3 p.m., but running late, PA1 69 and two companions are in charge of a half dozen or so mail storage cars, two RPOs, nine express cars and a single rider coach. The line here was built to raise the main line above the Kansas River bottoms after the devastating 1951 flood. The original line, still in use, is just beyond the edge of the embankment.
