The 6926 is in the shop for an exhaust manifold leak. I decided to take advantage of the unique shooting opportunity. You are looking down the throat of the turbo on a SD40. What you are seeing is the turbo screen. Otherwise known as the "parts catcher". The last line of defense for the turbocharger. This screen is used to catch debris before in enters the turbo potentially causing a significant problem. To the left, you can see the base of the removed portion of manifold. It is rather heavy so once the bolts were removed it was simply rolled on its side. In order to get this shot a segment of the exhaust manifold was removed. Then, a sheet of metal was placed down in the manifold to keep the camera from dropping into a cylinder. Lastly, the camera was shoved as far back as we could reach and then triggered by remote. Thankfully the camera was not damaged in the making of this shot but the same could not be said for our clothes! Kudos to my Dad (an ACWR mechanic) for the creative concept and assistance in the execution of the shot!
Generally speaking, shots where less than a full engine is shown. But I want to feature details, not half engines or full cabs, and definitely not full nose shots. Just shots where someone has zoomed in with purpose.
