Remarks: Turning the steering wheel was more of a suggestion than a command while getting to this location but this coal train made it well worth it. Catching solid Conrail power leading a train isn't as easy as it used to be but I've been fortunate enough to catch it twice at this location as seen here.

Remarks: As the warm glow of a fall sunset fades in the sky, sparks fly from the tip of the torch. By dawn nothing would be left of 1639's cab.

Remarks: The Cumberland Mine is operated by Alpha Natural Resources and according to their web site has an annual capacity of approximately 7 million clean tons. The coal is shipped 17 miles from the Cumberland facility via private railroad to the Monongahela River where it is placed on barges. One of the tunnels on the line was recently daylighted resulting in a new location to view the line which is mostly lined with thick brush.

Remarks: MDDE 801 is former CR 8641 (PC 8641) which continues to wear a special Conrail Express" paint scheme. The unit was part of an attempt to strengthen relationships with 18 short line railroads which connected to Conrail in the late 1990s. The unit is seen here pulling out of Frankfort, DE on its way south to Snow Hill, MD after picking up 5 cars from the Norfolk Southern interchange.

Remarks: In a scene that is not likely to be repeated in the near future, a W&LE ore train soars high above the CSX Keystone Sub. With the stock pile of ore in Mingo Junction, Ohio quickly disappearing there are only a handful of these trains left.
