Remarks: On a gorgeous spring morning in 1974, the Rio Grande Zephyr train #18 climbs Spanish Fork Canyon along it's namesake river approaching the small town of Thistle, Utah. The right of way at this point would be buried in mud in 1983 when a natural landslide blocked the D&RGW right of way, US Highway 6 and the Spanish Fork River. The railroad and highway would be relocated along the hillsides at right and a new spillway allowed the river to flow under the landslide. Sadly the ensuing flood of the Spanish Fork River destroyed the junction town of Thistle, with many homes floating away in the new lake which severed a connecting 132 mile branch to Salina, Richfield, and Marysvale.

Remarks: The fireman works hard and keeping the fires lit as the 1218 pulls another trainload of revenue for the N&W. Special thanks goes to Lerro Productions and the Virginia Museum of Transportation for allowing this photographic opportunity.

Remarks: The darkness temporarily succumbs to light, as a locomotive's headlight paints the right-of-way and adjacent hills, while the ETD brings up the rear with its signature flashing red light. The scene was made possible by a southbound intermodal, as it worked upgrade past the north switch at Bealville, shortly after nightfall.

Remarks: Got Steam? The Durango & Silverton sure does! In fact, a quick visit to the DSNG yard has been known to cause serious cases of "Roundhouse Envy" among officials of other tourist railroads. In this scene, DSNG Mikado #482 steps out onto the Durango turntable as 4 of her stablemates look on. The DSNG has no fewer than 5 operable steam locomotives with a 6th one currently undergoing heavy maintenance. From left to right, we see K-36s #482, 486, 481, 480 and K-28 #478. The latter has some of her appliances removed and is the engine undergoing maintenance. The only engine not pictured here is K-28 #473, which was at the ash pit and out of view to the left at the time of this photo.

Remarks: The passenger's aboard Cascades 509 have just emerged from about a minute of darkness, to be treated to a great view of the Tacoma Narrows on the Puget Sound. But they can't see what we can... Mt. Rainier, with a fresh coat of snow from a recent weather system. Click Here for another view from across the Sound. .
