With units of the type already being rebuilt fortunately one was "kodachromed" in its original form.

Looking almost new, this "problem child" would become one member of the few GE locomotives extensively rebuilt. I hope there are more in the future.

Santa Fe freight yards Barstow, CA.

These were getting rather long in the tooth by the time we captured the great lines in this broadside.

Amtrak SDP40F 500, pulling train 35, the westbound "Desert Wind," makes a station stop in Barstow, California, on June 24, 1981.

Roaring out of the yard eastbound this is a really mixed freight. Pigs mixed in are getting to be unusual. I guess you can see the entire train if you can see that well.

Kind of unusual I guess, the new paint scheme but an unrebuilt unit.

Unlike the truely wierd trucks SP had on their GP-40Xs ATSF opted for the regular -2 trucks. I love those flared radiators.

I caught this one departing and followed it all the way to San Berdoo that day.

These hit town about the same time as SP's did and of course there was the railfan campaign to get as many shots as soon as possible. Experimentals are always interesting.

I never saw this combination actually working anywhere but it may have been used at Barstow for a while.
