PURCELL OK (July) 1977 — Amtrak SDP40F 509 is on the point of train #16 The Lone Star. The train has completed its station stop and is on its way north to its next stop in Norman OK. To the left of the 509 Santa Fe SD45 5566 awaits a signal to proceed north with its mixed freight. To the far left GP39-2 3648 is tied down on the point of a work train. EMD built the 509 (b/n 72694-10) in June 1973. Some freight railroads reported tracking problems with The SD4P40Fs. Some of these railroads went so far as to ban the SDP40Fs from their tracks. Because of this the SDP40Fs were traded back to EMD with only a few years of operation. The 509 and many other SDP40Fs donated many internal components to the construction of F40PHRs. The 509 donated parts to F40PHR 372. EMD built the 372 (b/n 807050-12) in June 1981. My photo.
