Remarks & Notes
Three PRR Alco RSD-12 8670, 8664 & 8666 were assigned to the pusher role in August 1964. Every freight departing Altoona for Gallitzin and the West was assigned a pusher on the rear to assist the train uphill on its eleven mile ascent, ore trains even had mid train helpers. Photo by W.D. Volkmer , photo part of my slide collection.

One artifact of the steam era that remains in use to this day; even modern AC traction locomotives need help on the biggest hills.

Coal and steel don't go bad. This album features long, slow, heavy freight trains; drag freights, slop freights, dead freights, etc. Trains with lots of power, and lots of different cargo slogging along behind.
