Fresh out of the Strasburg Rail Road's shops, the classic GG-1 paint scheme as designer Raymond Loewy conceived it, with sans-serif Futura lettering. The 4859, built in December 1937 by Altoona/GE, pulled the first electrically-operated revenue passenger train into Harrisburg from Philadelphia on January 15, 1938. It also pulled the last Conrail GG1-powered freight with sister 4887, in November of 1979. Today, the 4859 is stored under Harrisburg's train shed, with no public access.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
