Remarks & Notes
Black Diamonds at The Three Bridges. A change in CSX's routing has brought unit coal trains to New York from April to September 2025. As part of the detours around Baltimore to accommodate tunnel work, some of the trains operated by CSX that would normally take the Old Main Line in Maryland were rerouted through New York & New Jersey, while others traveled through PA via Norfolk Southern. While a few loaded coal trains have passed through here during an unrelated detour in recent years, it has been decades since they were a regular sight in this area. On Friday, September 17, 2025, a pair of loaded coal trains passed through Selkirk Yard on their way to Baltimore. There were a few others that unexpectedly followed in later days, but for now, (we never know for sure) it appears that "black diamonds" have seen their last days on the River Sub. This is the famous "Three Bridges Shot" with (in ascending order) the railroad bridge (Popolopen Creek Railroad Bridge), the pedestrian bridge in Fort Montgomery State Park (Popolopen Suspension Bridge), and U.S Route 9W road bridge (Popolopen Arch Bridge).
