| Saved Southerners.
The roundhouse at the Georgia State Railroad Museum is filled with a variety of preserved equipment. Here we see two of the many pieces: Central of Georgia (CG) SW1 no. 1 and streetcar 756.
The streetcar is a conversion from a W5-class Melbourne car, modified with a diesel generator and batteries for off-wire operation. It is nicknamed "Dottie," in reference to the Savannah DOT that undertook the project. Dottie ran on the city's downtown River Street - a former freight branch along the River. Service ran from 2008 into early 2015 before a mechanical issue forced a temporary suspension of service, which would quietly turn into permanent closure of the line. |
