Split Skip-Stop.
Two four-car sets of R42 cars (St. Louis Car Co., 1969-1970) rest at the New York City Transit Authority (NYCTA) East New York Yard. Conveniently, one was signed for the J and the other for the Z; these two lines providing complimentary skip-stop service on the Jamaica Line! East New York Yard is one of the oldest - if not the oldest - of the TA's yards: parts of it date back to 1885. Because of this, and its location within the dense Brooklyn neighborhood of the same name, the yard is very small compared to other TA yards; many of its layup tracks do not fit a full 8-car train, and it is one of the few places in the subway system where trains are split apart and put together on a daily basis. The area where these two trains are laid up is a newer addition with longer tracks, though some trains are still split in this area to maximize the use of space.
