Jersey Cowl Geep Lives. On Friday, July 28, 2023, Former New Jersey Transit (NJT) GP40FH-2 ERDX (Eastern Rail Maintenance Division) 4139 was sitting inside the of the Kinkisharyo Piscataway, New Jersey facility. In 2016, this locomotive was acquired from NJT and has become the shop switcher and handles other tasks, including some freight business, as needed. In the background, a pair of containers are artistically staged on display, perhaps advertising this service. This engine was (re)built by Morrison Knudsen using the cab of CRIP 389 (GP40, EMD, 1/1969) cab and the cowl from BN 6629 (F45, EMD, 4/1971) and had Head End Power (HEP) added for passenger service before finding this yet 3rd life. Of the 15 that were once rostered by NJT, this is the only remaining GP40FH-2 in New Jersey, while the 6 purchased by MTA Metro-North Railroad continue to operate on Hoboken-based lines on a daily basis.
