Remarks & Notes |
It's five minutes after midnight and the 0-10-0 freight steam locomotive R # 976 of the Swedish Railway Museum Gävle just left Kiruna with an iron ore train of about 1300 tons towards the Norwegian border, to Vassijaure. The R # 976 was built in 1909 by Nydqvist och Holm (NOHAB) for the ore traffic of the Swedish State Railways and were the strongest Swedish steam locomotives class. Since the line was electrified as early as 1914, the five R series locomotives built were only in intended service for a few years. R # 976 entered the inventory of the Swedish Railroad Museum after being taken out of service in 1973. This special train was organized by the Railway Museum in cooperation with the mining company LKAB to celebrate 120 years of the iron ore railroad between Kiruna and Narvik. As the line is expected to be operated with the ERTMS train control system from 2023, this was the last opportunity for such a train.
