Remarks & Notes |
This is a shot I've had in mind for awhile but haven't been able to pull off until now. Black Hills Central 110 is working hard upgrade near the top of Tin Mill Hill just out of Hill City, South Dakota. The right-of-way dates from 1890 when the Burlington & Missouri River built a spur off of the main line in Hill City to a tin mill (now gone) that was on the hillside just to the right of where this image was taken. I've stood in the cut and watched the train work up the hill dozens of times, but this is the first time I've ever seen it from this angle. My first attempt had too much smoke; the second one was sunny and the train disappeared in the cut. Third time was the charm.
