A shortage of MBTA commuter power in early 1978 led to this combination of a Boston & Maine freight GP9 and a Canadian National steam generator car leading a train of former New Haven coaches on a Framingham-Boston local, seen at the site of the former Riverside station in Newton, MA.
The 70's and 80's were a transition period for the MBTA characterized by an eclectic mix of equipment including Budd RDC's, ex-New Haven stainless steel coaches, and a mix of motive power acquired from various railroads.
