Differences between two generations of GE locomotives are seen in this side view of a Huntsville and Madison County Railroad Authority northbound train approaching the Meadowbrook Drive crossing in Huntsville, Alabama. High-short hood B23-7 3986 was originally built for the Southern Railway as their 3986 and U23 9554 was built for the Louisville and Nashville Railroad as L&N 2800.
The rattiest ugly duckling locomotives around still in service in the picture, from rust buckets to bad patch jobs and everything in between.
As the saying goes, "paint doesn't haul freight!"
