| Weller-bound empty coal train NS 823 with a UP AC44CW leading a standard cab NS SD70 heads up the NS Buchanan Branch behind the iconic triple-story Walmart Supercenter in Grundy, VA. The store's unique location and design were the result of a flood control project brought on by multiple devastating floods in the 20th Century. The project created a large floodwall around downtown Grundy on which 4-lane US 460 is located on, and also brought on the creation of a 13-acre elevated plateau across the Levisa Fork for businesses to be rebuilt on. This led to the single-story Walmart being built on top of a two-story parking garage with additional retail space around the perimeter of the building, and the relocation of the Buchanan Branch main behind the building. |
