Amtrak 7, the Empire Builder, is cruising along the Flathead river just minutes away from a West Glacier Park station stop. The train has steadily made up time since being an hour and a half late out of Havre and is now only 20 minutes late into the Belton station stop. Sadly we were majorly cloud hosed by a small cumulus cloud at the final seconds, and at the same time the sun dipped behind the mountain. This was the final catch of an afternoon of watching trains roll through the southern end of Glacier National Park. This scene is one that is shot many times, second only to maybe two medicine bridge, but is a must shoot if you are in the area. The Glacier area and the railroad are tied very closely together in the binds of history, and many of the buildings built by the Great Northern Railroad back in the late 1800's are still around and in use.
The GE Genesis series are well known for being Amtrak's locomotive. With confirmation of retirement from Amtrak themselves, their time is limited. Now is your chance to catch them before the chargers arrive!
