A coal train slowly rolls behind Appalachia's main street as it prepares to leave town. The track to the left of the train is the former No. 1 Southern-Interstate interchange track; Nos. 2 and 3 Southern-Interstate interchange tracks, located to the left of No. 1, have been removed and lie to the right of the main line on what was formerly the L&N's CV main line and interchange tracks.
The EMD SD (special duty) series are a strong and reliable kind of locomotive which still serve America's rails today. They have proved themselves reliable by clocking in several million miles of freight service over several decades.
