Snaking her way past MP 308.7, DRGW Locomotive 315 hugs the contours of the hills above the Rio de Los Pinos as she hauls her freight consist west toward Toltec Gorge.
The Toltec Gorge area is one of the most spectacular sections of the old D&RGW Line between Antonito, Colorado and Chama, New Mexico. The railroad runs high on the mountainside, with a deep gorge on the south side....in this case, the Fireman's side....of the train. In late September and early October, the spectacular view from the train is enhanced by an explosion of color as the Aspen trees light up the hillsides in beautiful gold and orange colors. The view can be a little scary for those that have a fear of heights, however. Folks who are a little squeamish in that regard had best ride on the RIGHT side of westbound trains.
The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad and the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad are all that remains of the legendary Denver & Rio Grande Western narrow gauge system. Here you'll find some of my favorites from these two beautiful railways.
