Remarks & Notes |
The Canisteo Pit is a large lake formed in a complex of 19 inactive mine pits located immediately north of Coleraine, Bovey and Taconite in Itasca County, Minnesota along the BNSF Casco Sub. When mining activity ceased in 1985 the water level started to rise and slowly ate away at the bank and causing a collapse of the pit wall along the line forcing the DM&IR to close the line as a through route. CN decided on February 1st 2004 that due to that erosion that the track was not safe. CN ( which bought the DM&IR) owns this section and has trackage rights over the line originally from the Great Northern then BN now BNSF. |
