It’s Conrail’s first birthday, and a late-afternoon overview of Allentown yard yields a glimpse of the early progression of Conrail’s brand. On the heavy side yard throat, unrepainted Lehigh Valley SW8 271 is accompanied by a freshly-painted former LV caboose. The caboose fleet was quickly repainted, while legacy locomotive paint schemes lasted well into the 1980’s. On the eastbound main, a C420/RS11 pair, in patched LHR/LV paint, heads toward Bethlehem engine terminal, while another LV SW8 works the heavy side yard. The city of Bethlehem can be seen in the distance, including Bethlehem Steel’s furnaces directly above LV 271.
Not
just heritage schemes, not just commemorative schemes - this album is devoted to some of the world's most interesting paint schemes, past or present.
