Remarks & Notes |
DL 9170 leads DL 9095 on train 240 from Wellington crossing Manson's Siding bridge north of Raurimu Spiral. Mt Ruapehu 2797m (highest mountain in North Island) in the distance is an active volcano with a crater lake that is closely monitored due to lahar danger. Ruapehu last erupted Sep 1995 - big fright for the skiers on it's slopes! One of the first diesel locomotives exported to a western railroad from China, the DL class has about 3600 Hp and is the most powerful diesel-electric loco operated by KiwiRail. |
