I railfanned with my cousin Bob Markle quite a bit over the years, especially in the 1970's and 1980's. Bob is a fan of industrials and shortlines, and scoured the pages of The Short Line and Extra 2200 South magazines to learn the whereabouts of unusual locomotives. Trips were then planned around that knowledge, with scheduled visits and permission in advance. On this day, we visited the Carbon Limestone Company in Hillsville, PA. A manager took us around in his truck and let us photograph a wide assortment of active and defunct narrow- and stangerd-gauge "critters". Many were backlit or obscured by overgrowth, but the main objects of our visit, two wartime-production GE 45-tonners, were in good light. We found D-11 hidden behind some of the huge limestone piles on the property. Today, all is gone.
