An Auckland Transport train crosses an inlet of Orakei Basin which is actually a crater, one of over 50 volcanic features in the Auckland district. There are several DC locomotives in KiwiRail livery still on lease to AT but the loco hauled trains will soon be just a memory once the new electric units take over all services later this year.
Trains on 3' 6" (1.067m) track from Whangarei to Bluff with virtually heritage rebuilt EMD and GE locomotives still the mainstay power. The network was privatized in 1990's and operated by Toll until 2008 when state owned KiwiRail was established.
