It is doubtful anyone will ever accuse the MK50-3 of being beautiful. One thing's for sure though, for better or worse, it is unique in the diesel locomotive world. Only six were produced by MK in 1994 as the MK5000C with a Caterpillar prime mover. The Utah Railway acquired the entire fleet in Nov. 2000, transplanting them with EMD prime movers in 2003. A quintet of 50 series EMDs lead a Savage to IPP coal load through Spanish Fork Canyon, breaking free of the shadowy Red Narrows on Oct. 17, 2014.
