One of Santa Fe's large 4-8-4s, 3782, is getting serviced at the railroad's Redondo Junction roundhouse facility, just a couple miles south of downtown Los Angeles. The date, and the photographer, are unknown but from other negatives in this group, it appears to be the 1940s. AT&SF 3782 was built by Baldwin Locomotive Works on 1941, and was equipped with a nickel steel boiler. These boilers proved to be less than ideal, however, and 3782 received a new boiler in November 1949. After several years of storage, this big Northern was sold to scrappers Luria Brothers on June 10th, 1959. Curiously, the numberboards are blanked, which makes me wonder if this might have been taken during World War II.
An attempt to put the best picture of engines that represent each of America's railroads. When a better picture of an engine/type is found, it will be added.
