Very nice, I love seeing pictures from that era. Any idea what the large cage like structure behind the locomotive is for?

That large cage-like structure is an old-style gas storage tank with a floating roof. The roof was able to move up and down, depending upon the amount of gas being stored, in order to eliminate breathing losses and greatly reduce the evaporative loss of the stored liquid. These tanks used to be very common in southern California, and I remember seeing these until around the late '60s or early '70s. They were a bit of an eye-sore, but I kind of miss their industrial look now. And, as you can see, they made an interesting backdrop in photos!
