In 1971, when EMD informed the Clinchfield Railroad that they would not be able to fulfill an order for new power for at least a year. As a result, the power short and EMD-loyal Clinchfield went outside of the family and purchased 7 U36C's from GE. The purpose of these units was to take point on the Duke Power unit coal trains, however, the units soon found their way into the power pool and were used on virtually all trains on the railroad. The units possessed the same 62:15 gearing ratio as all others on the railroad, which made this possible. Despite the Clinchfield's positive opinion on the units, the railroad desired to return to full EMD status, and as a result, all 7 were traded to fellow Family Lines partner Seaboard Coast Line for an equal number of SD45's. 35mm slide from my collection, photo by Bill Bedell.
An attempt to put the best picture of engines that represent each of America's railroads. When a better picture of an engine/type is found, it will be added.
