Remarks & Notes |
Four brand new consecutively numbered Alaska Railroad GP49's (2801-2802-2803-2804) along with a BN business car & caboose are being hostled from Interbay to South Seattle on the Burlington Northern Railroad. A rather unique locomotive model for EMD, these units made several round trips between Chicago and Seattle on BN priority intermodal freights before being placed on a barge and sent to the 49th state. One could reason the BN gave the Alaska Railroad a break on the cost of shipping the units from LaGrange to Seattle in exchange for testing new locomotive technology. Also noted, these units are equipped with just about every accessory available from EMD's catalogue including the engineer's L-shaped window. The only thing missing is the snowplow which upon arrival at Anchorage, ARR shop forces will install a specially designed plow ideally suited for railroading in Alaska's harsh winter climate. |
