Cogscape - Burt's Ravine. Located just above the famous Jacob's Ladder Trestle is the second steepest portion of the Mt. Washington Cog Railway, known as Long Trestle. From our camera position just above the trestle, we get a commanding view of the 1PM train clawing its way toward the summit. Just beyond the trestle, the terrain drops off precipitously, some 1900 feet into Burt's Ravine. Passing this point, the Brakeman on one of my trips once pointed out a large, white rock deep in the ravine below. "See that rock, he asked?" As we all nodded, he said: "If we derail, that's where we'll all meet to hike out." Only the railfans seemed to appreciate the humor. Folks have occasionally asked me why the Cog Railway is built entirely on wooden trestle. This shot illustrates the reason very clearly. The terrain is so rocky and rough, that the railway needs to minimize the number of points of contact that the track makes with the ground...and the trestle solves that problem nicely.
From a hint of "Bee" (NKP 765), colorful "Bees" (KCS), "Bees" w/ "attitude", to "Bees" that "sting" your eyes, in their own way they have "Bee" on display! Equipment that "Buzzes" with Yellow & Black colors! ("Bees" can still "Bee" entering this "hive"!)
