On the edges of the rail head, you can see the deep semi-circular marks left by the rail grinder which came through last week. In the center of the rail head presumably is a lubricant applied after the grinding (thanks to J. Moller for the insight) which actually caused Amtrak 79 to skid completely past the Durham station while trying to make its daily stop. That must have been quite a surprise to those waiting on the platform, not to mention the crew! |
