CSX borrowed UP's Challenger 3985 to celebrated the 50th anniversary of the annual Santa Train in 1992. The railroad dressed it up as a Clinchfield locomotive for this occasion.
When I arrived at Hamlet this day I found this line of stored GP16 units awaiting disposition. I had become accustomed to seeing them on locals around the region, and hated to see them go.
This was the Yancey Railroad's bridge over the Toe River at Kona, back when it was still standing. Unfortunately, the bridge was first damaged by a bulldozer and later burned by vandals.
The awesome UP Challenger was taking the spotlight as it was being prepared for it's trip the next day on CSX's Santa Claus Special. A CSX GP30M rolls by pretty much unnoticed by most of the rail... (more)
