A south-bound freight runs between north and south lanes of Highway 1 between Auckland and Hamilton. The river is the Waikato which flows from Lake Taupo.

Just out of Westfield, this train will pass through 13 tunnels enroute to Whangarei. At Wellsford it will pick up a rake of loaded four wheel wagons-a rarity now on KiwiRail network.
