Appalachian Railroading Icons
Quite the eclectic lineup at Western Maryland Scenic's Ridgeley Yard. On the left is WMSR 501, a GP30 originally built for the Pennsylvania Railroad. Nowadays, it sits dead in Ridgeley. In the foreground is recent acquisition CSXT 4621, an SD40 originally built for the Western Maryland. I've been told it's currently inoperable and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. More rumors are floating around that it'll be painted into the Western Maryland "speed lettering" paint scheme, but personally, I enjoy it in the CSX YN1 paint it arrived on property wearing. As far as I know, it's the last locomotive in existence still wearing this livery. Finally, off to the right is Conemaugh and Black Lick 111, another recent arrival. 111 is an SW7 built new for the C&BL in 1947, making it older than 1309, the WMSR's only currently-operating steam locomotive. Given the fact that it still saw revenue service on the C&BL up until recently, it still runs, despite being significantly older than the two units to its left.
