Remarks & Notes
The Valley Railroad, also known as the Essex Steam train is special in that they maintain and operate three coal fired steam locomotives. During the busy Christmas season all three can be found under steam, and a diesel is usually handling a fourth train set. On the Saturday before Christmas the 2pm train which is the first of the day has just departed Essex and is passing The Meadow. Locomotive #97 was built in 1923 at The Alco Cooke Locomotive Works for export to Cuba. The order was cancelled and the locomotive ended up serving a career om the Birmingham and Southeastern Railroad. It has been on the property in Essex since 1970.
