Last of its Kind
Hidden among other retired and stored Amtrak locomotives is the last original Phase IV-painted P40DC on the fleet. Of the original 44 P40DCs ordered by Amtrak, 15 received an overhaul (including fresh Phase V paint) in 2009, while the remaining 29 were used for parts, stored, or sold to other operators such as ConnDOT and NJ Transit. Nowadays, all but one of these stored units have been sold off, either for scrap or subsequently rebuilt for railroads like the Keewatin Railway. As far as I know, 800 is the final non-rebuilt P40 that Amtrak still has on property. With the final 2009-rebuilt P40 being retired in the last few months, the future is uncertain for all P40DC types on Amtrak, regardless of rebuild status.
