Going wide on the Tunnel Mountain Trestle. Here's a wide view of one of the most iconic scenes on the 67-mile, narrow gauge, White Pass & Yukon Route. This is the Tunnel Mountain Trestle at Milepost 15.9. In this frame, we see the line's last remaining, operable steam locomotive, the Baldwin Mikado #73, bringing a 5-car passenger special southbound out of the 250 ft. tunnel and across the wooden trestle. This is not a place that's even remotely accessible to the public and there's actually not a lot of trackside real estate from which to take photos. This particular image was captured during a September 2025 photo shoot on the White Pass, which was organized by Lerro Photography. Access to the site was by train and the extended photography session here was only made possible by the fact that in late September, there were no cruise ships in town, and hence no need to work around tourist trains. A photo session like this would be virtually impossible during the height of the cruise ship season in Skagway.
The beauty of America's 49th state is unequaled. Enjoy it with these views of Alaska's best trains: Denali Star, Coastal Classic, Glacier Discovery, Aurora Winter Train and White Pass & Yukon.
