Electric cogwheel railcar Bhe 1/2 # 24 (built 1937) of the Pilatus Bahn is leaving Pilatus Kulm station track 1 for the journey down to Alpnachstad. In the foreground, you can see one of the unique track turners that are used here instead of switches. For technical reasons, the Locher rack system does not allow for switches; instead, either sliding platforms or these track turners are used. A curved piece of track is installed at the top and bottom of a solid steel plate, and turning the plate connects it to one track or the other. The world's steepest cogwheel railway was inaugurated in 1889 and goes from Alpnachstad (440 meter a.s.l.) to the Pilatus mountain (2073 meter a.s.l.). The gauge is 800 mm and the Locher cogwheel system is unique. Since 2023, this railcars are replaced by new Bhe 2/2 from StadlerRail. Bhe 1/2 # 24 was privately preserved and located in Biel.
